The Itzulia will go back to Vitoria-Gasteiz in 2027

After a one-year absence, the capital of Álava will once again welcome the international peloton as the starting point for one of the stages of next year’s race.

The Itzulia Basque Country will be back in Vitoria-Gasteiz in 2027. After being left out of the 2026 route, the capital of Álava will reclaim its place in the race and host the start of one of the six stages to be held between 5 and 10 April.

This means that the Itzulia will return to one of its most frequently visited venues. Over the years, Vitoria-Gasteiz has hosted many stages of the race, becoming a regular stop for the peloton and a key point along the route.

The capital of Álava will once again experience the atmosphere of the hours before a stage: the arrival of the team buses, the last-minute preparations of the riders, their interaction with the fans and the start of the day’s racing. It will be a chance for the city to revisit one of the most recognisable images of its relationship with the Itzulia.

“Vitoria-Gasteiz will once again be part of the Itzulia route in 2027, as the starting point of one of the stages of this major international race. The Itzulia is a race with deep roots in the Basque Country. It is part of our sporting culture and allows us to project an image of a vibrant, open Vitoria-Gasteiz that is committed to sport. Welcoming back some of the best cyclists in the world is a chance for fans of top-class cycling to enjoy an event that is part of our history, one with which Vitoria-Gasteiz has a special connection. We are delighted to welcome back the Itzulia and to help make this great race even bigger and get cycling back into the public eye,” said Maider Etxebarria, Mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The confirmation of its return means that Vitoria-Gasteiz will once again feature on the Itzulia route after missing out on last year’s race. It will also mean that the city will be able host an event that is a fan favourite which has been a regular feature in the competition’s recent history.

The event organisers have yet to announce the details of the stage that will start from the capital of Álava. The route and other sports-related information will be revealed along with the full route of the 2027 Itzulia Basque Country.
