Espelette is a picturesque village with a pretty alley lined with beautiful traditional houses from the Basque Country. There are local artisans and producers there. The atmosphere of the village makes you want to stroll and take your time by sitting on the terraces of cafes and restaurants. With its privileged location, between sea and mountains, the village attracts many tourists every year who come to discover the local heritage and the history of chili peppers. Major events promote the town such as the Race of the Ridges, the international Gauargi dance festival, the Pottok Fair as well as the famous Chili Pepper Festival.
City hall. lt is a building which was opened in the year 1760, with the shield of the village carved in stone and presiding over the front entrance. lt suffered a fire in 1813, which was provoked by the French troops occupying Spain during the time of Napoleon. They destroyed the whole archive of the city hall. In front of the city hall, the square of “Fueros” can be found, in which many citizens from Alsasua celebrate many festivities. Within sorne of the most important traditions and celebrations, there is the meeting with “Olentzero”, the dancing of “zortzikos” in Saint Agueda, the dances of Momotxorros during the famous rural carnival of Alsasua, the concert in Saint Joan and many other festivities throughout the year.
