Nestled at the foot of Mount Ganguren, between Bilbao and Arratia, Galdakao has much to see, learn, and enjoy. As a gateway to the largest city in the Basque Country, it is one of the municipalities with the most remnants of the Iron Belt: it boasts an interesting route of almost seven kilometers, comprised of trenches and tunnels built during the 1936 war to protect the capital of Biscay.
In the Elexalde neighborhood stands the 13th-century Andra Mari Church, an architectural gem from the transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles. Along the Ibaizabal River, you can find the Puentelatorre and Torrezabal bridges, dating back to the Kingdom of Navarre, as well as the 18th-century Mercadillo Bridge, composed of four arches.
The Zuhatzu neighborhood features a popular skatepark with a 1,200-square-meter open-air deck, unique in the Basque Country. Torrezabal Kultur Etxea has also become a landmark, and the town’s gastronomic offerings, including a Michelin-starred restaurant, along with its extensive shopping, make it even more appealing.
