Etapa de kilometraje medio, pero con casi 2.900 metros de desnivel. El recorrido circular suele generar ritmo alto desde el inicio, con poco espacio para la relajación. Aquí pueden aparecer ataques lejanos si la general está ajustada. No es una etapa claramente decisiva, pero sí peligrosa para corredores mal colocados o con equipos justos.

Basauri stands on the banks of the river Nervión, surrounded by mountains and paths that have made it a favourite with hikers and cyclists.
